An ongoing research project that highlights multilingualism and the strength of being on the margins in relation to historical and contemporary oppression of minority languages in Sweden. Two narratives unfold paralell to each other, one following the working houses in Norrbotten, which was a prominent tool in the swedification of Tornedalen and Sápmi between 1903 and 1956, and the other centering the Milan Congress in 1880 which banned sign language as an educational language until 1981 in Sweden, for the benefit of teaching deaf and hearing impaired people lip reading and speech.
